Women's March on Washington
mixed media book, 2017
The photos in this book were taken at the historic Women’s March on Washington in January, 2017. I manipulated each photo in Photoshop to isolate certain colors, especially the pink of the ubiquitous Pussyhats, while keeping the rest of the image in black and white. Photographically, I focused on the signage I saw at the march. Some of the slogans were empowering, some were very specific, and others provided comic relief. I wanted to demonstrate the range of messages that I came across at this monumental event. The pink yarn stitching alludes to the Pussyhat project that is representative of today’s women’s rights movement. The handcrafted quality of the project is meant to reflect the handmade nature of the hats which brings supporters of women’s rights together worldwide.
